Thematic Areas

The thematic working groups of the Africa-Europe Civil Society Platform facilitate people-to-people exchange and provide a space to develop common advocacy positions and evidence on issues related to the AU-EU Partnership. They aggregate expertise on key issues within the AU-EU Joint Vision 2030, including:

  • Climate & biodiversity
  • Economic Development, trade & finance
  • Food systems & agriculture
  • Human rights, governance, gender, & multilateral reform
  • Migration
  • Youth

These groups develop high-quality analyses and policy recommendations for submission to AU-EU bodies.

Human rights, governance, gender, multilateral reform

The AU and the EU must take decisive actions to address conflicts through robust
peacekeeping initiatives and diplomatic engagement. A collaborative approach is essential, focusing on conflict prevention, mediation, and the promotion of social cohesion among affected communities.

Climate and biodiversity

The key challenges Africa is facing in relation to the environment are the climate crisis,
biodiversity loss and pollution. Deliver on the Paris Agreement, SDG7, and global energy goals by scaling up renewables, doubling energy efficiency, phasing out fossil fuels, and advancing just, inclusive, and locally driven energy transitions aligned with national priorities.

Food systems and agriculture

As Africa and Europe face converging crises — climate collapse, conflict, migration, and
economic injustice — food systems must be recognized as a strategic front. The AU-EU
partnership can no longer serve corporate expansion and extractive models. It must be
rebuilt on the principles of sovereignty, dignity, ecological resilience, and mutual survival.

Youth

For a flourishing Africa-Europe Partnership, one that fosters shared prosperity and promotes
peace and security for the well-being of all, the role and importance of youth requires
significant attention. Our genuine and full participation requires that we are viewed as active agents of positive social change, capable of co-creating solutions and addressing root causes of structural inequalities.

Economic Development, trade & finance

Global economic governance and financing for development and are critical issues for the AU, EU and their member states. The promotion of fair global finance rules that fight inequality, extreme wealth concentration, and the climate crisis should be a top priority for both continents.

Migration

The question of international migration cannot be addressed in isolation from the broader relationship between the two continents and must take into account the continuously widening economic disparity existing at the global scale, the generation, distribution and
utilisation of wealth, the organisation of the world’s raw materials, or the coordination of
markets.
